Poster for I'm an Austrian-Canadian

Fri Feb 07 2014, 8 p.m.

“I’m Austrian-Canadian!”

The delights and treasures of both Austria and Canada are on full display as we travel between and mingle with these two worlds. Bookended by two of Austria’s musical greats, Haydn and Mozart, this programme weaves its way through three distinct Canadian styles.

Have you ever heard a timpani concerto live? Have you ever heard a Canadian timpani concerto live in an old Austrian style with a modern twist? Maya Badian’s Concerto Grosso for Timpani and Trumpet Obligato featuring Ed Reifel as the soloist fits the bill! Disquiet by Jocelyn Morlock then makes the dramatic shift to the ethereally beautiful.

In the ultimate example of mixing two musical cultures, Aaron Gervais’ Concerto for Mozart Piano Videos then brings the virtuosic keyboard playing of soloist Greg Oh to visual life with instantaneous video projections. Start the whole evening off with the delightful Lo Speziale Overture by Haydn and finish with the crowning glory of Mozart’s symphonic writing, his Symphony No. 41 (Jupiter), and you have a feast of Canadian and Austrian delights sure to satisfy the hungriest of concert goers.

Admission: PAY-WHAT-YOU-CAN! That means you can pay whatever you like: $1, $10, or even $500 (if you want). Suggested prices are $20 adults, $10 students/seniors and $5 for children under 18.

Location: Trinity St Paul’s Centre, 427 Bloor St. West, Toronto (map)
