25 Years Steirer Club in Toronto

In 1973 the executive of the Austrian Club Edelweiss, in Toronto, suggested organizing annual dances featuring regions of Austria, starting with the province of Steiermark.

The first and subsequent two Steirer festivities were such a success that a “Steirerbund” was formed as an “Untergruppe” to the Club Edelweiss, electing a separate board of directors.

Within a short time the membership to this subgroup grew well above all expectations, but, unfortunately, questions of monetary responsibilities split this successful organization in half. As a result, for several years hence, two Steirer groups were operating in the Toronto area.

Thanks to the leadership of some board members on both sides, amalgamation took place once again and the 15^th, 20^th and 25^th anniversaries were celebrated as one entity under the name of “Steirerklub Inc. Toronto.”

Over the past quarter century, uncountable activities took place, strengthening the bond not only between the membership but also between friends and guests from many parts of the globe, especially our “homeland” Austria.

The two trips to Austria must be mentioned and constitute the high points of all undertakings to date. Meeting and being guests of many municipalities, including heads of provincial governments in Austria, diminished greatly the span of our physical separation.

The 25^th anniversary celebration started on March 12, 2000, with a complimentary “gala” dinner. On May 7 there was a special annual meeting that included a complimentary lunch. Festivities ended with an anniversary picnic on July 12, 2000. All activities were well received and the membership increased by 10%.

Presently, the clubhouse of the Steirerklub is the Bavarian restaurant and banquet hall “The Musket” in Etobicoke.
